CT Update on the California Excise Tax
Beginning immediately, Constance Therapeutics will now charge a 15% Excise Tax (in addition to California sales tax) on all products, as mandated by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).
As stated by CDTFA: "A 15 percent excise tax is imposed upon purchasers of cannabis and cannabis products. Retailers of cannabis and cannabis products are required to collect the 15 percent excise tax from the purchaser based on the average market price of any retail sale and pay it to their cannabis distributor."
At Constance Therapeutics, patients are our first consideration. While we are obligated by law to charge this tax, we realize that it can be financially burdensome. We encourage patients to contact their local county health departments and apply for the state-issued California Medical Marijuana Identification Card, which exempts patients from paying sales and use taxes.
Local San Francisco residents can submit an application here:
San Francisco Department of Public Health
101 Grove Street, Room 105
San Francisco, CA 94102
Hours: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday & Friday
In addition to the completed application (which can be found online here), patients need to have a doctor's recommendation, valid government-issued identification, proof of residence, proof of Medi-Cal (only if applicable), as well as pay a fee (capped at $100) to receive the state ID card.
For more information on your specific county's Medical Marijuana Card program, please check the CA Department of Public Health's website.
