Constance Talks About Cannabis and the Endocannabinoid System
Last month, Constance Finley, founder and CEO of Constance Pure Botanical Extracts, delivered a speech to a jam-packed audience at the Mind & Body Nightlife event hosted by the California Academy of Sciences.
It was the biggest turnout that Nightlife had ever seen and everyone crammed in to hear Constance talk about the benefits of cannabis.
Constance began her speech by discussing the extraordinary relationship that cannabis has to the human body’s endocannabinoid system, a highly important physiologic system that owes its discovery – and its name – to cannabis.
Following is an excerpt from Constance’s speech:
Look at all of you, small endocannabinoid systems! Our complex bodies evolved with a lock and key system to which cannabis fits. Within ourselves, we biochemically produce actions which affect every system in our body through the endocannabinoid system.
Scientists estimate that this system evolved over 600 million years ago. Today, it is shared by sea squirts, tiny nematodes, and all vertebrate species.
All of us here were born with a vast network of cannabinoid binding sites – in our immune cells, glands, connective tissues, organs – as well as the ability to create tiny signaling molecules to excite these receptors.
Endocannabinoids are these substances our bodies naturally create.
Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids found in plants that stimulate these same receptors. The most famous of these are THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (or cannabidiol).
The lock and key connection with which we find ourselves outfitted for is no coincidence. Our co-evolution with this plant, Cannabis Sativa, is an outcome of our ancestors’ determined effort to start a relationship with this plant.
What we are seeing today – and what is so remarkable to study and learn about – is the evolutionary result of this relationship.
We should not ignore this connection between our biological evolutionary history and a plant that has the ability to do what we already do to ourselves.

Constance Finley has been developing CBD-rich cannabis oils since 2009, gradually perfecting her pure extracts for the benefit of patients suffering from cancer, nausea, pain and other debilitating illnesses. Now, Constance and her team tour all across the country educating physicians, patients and the general public about the therapeutic potentials of cannabis strains and products.
